Born a decade apart, Sun could well be Ding’s successor on the world stage if she continues on this path. Against the player who won it all, the teenager never flinched as she took the game to Ding, playing with accuracy consistently and at breathtaking speed. Ding had her chances but was edged in the third game, which proved crucial. Despite pulling one back, she could not stave off defeat in the FAST5.
She is a legendary player, so I always have to be well prepared to bring my best game against her. I got a bit impatient in the fourth game and probably rushed things, hoping to end things early. Obviously, we know each other well but I executed my shots a lot better today.

We’ve played each other heaps lately and I always find it hard to get into the game. She always starts well - it’s perhaps the speed and accuracy she has and also the quality of her returns that put me off my stride. But overall I’m satisfied with how I’ve played in this tournament.
