A storming display from Xu Xin who made up for missing out on the final in Malaysia by winning the Singapore leg decisively. Against the world’s foremost penholder, the Lin juggernaut came to a shuddering halt as the Taiwanese teenager did not get much of a look-in. Xu was simply superior in all departments, playing with the spontaneity that fans expect from this enigmatic world number two. There was a mini-fightback from Lin in the third game but Xu was able to quell that and the Chinese ace went on to record a popular win.
Mentally I felt really good in this tournament and played with a happy heart. It feels like home ground playing in Singapore and I hope fans will continue to turn up and support the players they like. Had I finished second, I’d say I’ll use the prize money to buy milk powder for my kids. But now that I’ve won, I should buy a couple of designer handbags for my wife.
Xu Xin
I knew this was going to be a challenging one and he is one player that is tough to work out. There wasn’t any point when I felt comfortable at all and there were very few weaknesses in his game, even when he does make the occasional mistake.
