A first meeting for these players has left both of them with greater understanding of each other’s play, and a win in Lin’s favour. The rising star from Taiwan continues to grow his fanbase with every win and he took his time to settle into the match. After dropping the opening game, Lin found his groove and was particularly effective on his backhand return. Lin also showed no anxiety after losing the first FAST5 game, as he promptly regrouped and wrapped up the match in the next game.
I was a bit unsettled during the first game, but I became more decisive as the match wore on. I got into rhythm and just followed the game plan that my coach and I set out. I don’t feel a lot of pressure and am getting used to this setting.
Lin’s backhand banana return was deceptive and had a lot more spin than I anticipated. He didn’t give me many easy balls to play and I also started to make more mistakes as the game progressed.
